How to Read Chord Diagrams

1

Strings & Frets

Vertical lines are strings (low E on left, high e on right). Horizontal lines are frets.

2

Dots & Symbols

Filled dots show where to place your fingers. ○ = open string (play unfretted). × = muted (don't play).

3

Barre Chords

A thick rounded bar across multiple strings means one finger presses all those strings at that fret.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does × mean?

× means that string should not be played. Either mute it with a fretting finger or avoid plucking it with your picking hand.

What is a barre chord?

A barre chord uses one finger (usually the index) to press down all or several strings at one fret, creating a movable chord shape.

What is the difference between major and minor?

Major chords have a bright, happy sound. Minor chords use a flattened third and sound darker or sadder. Changing Am to A major is just one note difference.

What does maj7 mean?

A major 7th chord (maj7) adds the 7th note of the major scale to the chord. It has a dreamy, jazzy quality. A7 is different — it uses a flattened (dominant) 7th.
