What is A4 = 440 Hz?

A4 is the A above middle C, and 440 Hz is the international standard reference pitch agreed upon in 1939. All other notes are derived from this.

What is middle C?

Middle C is C4 (MIDI note 60) with a frequency of 261.626 Hz at A=440. It sits at the center of a piano keyboard.

Why do some instruments use A=442?

Many European orchestras and some jazz ensembles use A=442 Hz for a slightly brighter sound. Use the reference A input to recalculate all frequencies for your pitch standard.

What is a MIDI note number?
